Amala Akkineni is an Indian actress, dancer Bharata Natyam, and animal welfare activist. She has appeared in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Bollywood films. She has won two Filmfare South One Awards for Malayalam (Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Malayalam – Ulladakkam – 1991) and One for Telugu (Filmfare Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role – Telugu – Life Is Beautiful – 2012). Amala is the co-founder of Hyderabad Blue Cross, a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Hyderabad, India, which works for the welfare of animals and the preservation of their rights.
Amala was born in Calcutta to an Indian naval officer from Bengal and an Irish mother. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Bharata Natyam from the Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts. She has given many concerts around the world. She was then persuaded to join the films of T. Rajender, who visited her at home with her sister and convinced her mother to let her play in the film, which would be a classic film starring her Bharat dance. Natyam.
Amala married actor Akkineni Nagarjuna of Telugu Film in 1992 and the couple has a son, actor Akkineni Akhil. They currently live in Hyderabad. She is the stepmother of actor Naga Chaitanya. In an interview with The Hindu, she said that her biggest fear was not to “talk the talk” when it comes to social issues.
Amala debuted in a successful Tamil film titled Mythili Ennai Kaathali, directed by T. Rajendar. Winning fame overnight, she has charmed moviegoers among some fifty films, including several Tamil box office successes. She played with her future husband Akkineni Nagarjuna in hits such as Nirnayam and Siva. She received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Malayalam for the film Ulladakkam.
