K Viswanath (February 19, 1930 – February 2, 2023) was an Indian director, screenwriter and actor, known for his works mainly in Telugu cinema. He has received five National Film Awards, seven State Nandi Awards, ten Filmfare Awards South and one Filmfare Award in Hindi. He received the “Prix du public” at the “Besançon Film Festival in France” in 1981. In 1992, he received the Raghupathi Venkaiah Prize from the State of Andhra Pradesh and the civil honor Padma Shri for his contribution in the field of the arts. . In 2017, he received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honor in cinema.
Viswanath began his film career as an audiographer and over sixty years has made 53 feature films in a variety of genres including films based on the performing arts, visual arts and aesthetics. He has received international recognition for his works and is known for blending parallel cinema with mainstream commercial cinema. Viswanath’s filmography is known for addressing issues of caste, color, disability, gender discrimination, misogyny, alcoholism, and socio-economic challenges through the liberal arts.
His directorial works produced by Poornodaya Movie Creations screened with special mention at the Moscow International Film Festival; these films were dubbed into the Russian language and were theatrically released in Moscow.
Viswanath was married to Kasinadhuni Jayalakshmi. Actor Chandra Mohan and singer SP Balasubrahmanyam and SP Sailaja are Viswanath’s cousins. K. Viswanath has directed over 50 feature films.
Viswanath died on February 2, 2023, at the age of 92 in Hyderabad.
