Vani Jairam born as Kalaivani (30 November 1945 – 4 February 2023), also credited as Vani Jayaram, was an Indian playback singer in South Indian cinema. Vani’s career began in 1971 and spanned over five decades. She has played over a thousand Indian movies recording over 10,000 songs. Moreover, she has recorded thousands of devotional and private albums and has also participated in numerous solo concerts in India and abroad.
Renowned for her vocal range and ease in adapting to any difficult composition, Vani was often the choice of several composers across India from the 1970s until the late 1990s. She sang in several Indian languages ( 19 languages), such as Kannada, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Gujarati, Haryanvi, Assamese, Tulu and Bengali.
Vani has won the National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer three times and has also won state government awards from the states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. In 2012, she received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award – South for her achievements in South Indian film music. In July 2017, she received the Best Female Vocalist award at the 2017 NAFA event in New York.
Vani was born as Kalaivani in Vellore in Tamil Nadu, into a Tamil family of classically trained musicians as the fifth daughter in a family of six daughters and three sons. Her parents Duraisamy Iyengar-Padmavathi, trained under Ranga Ramunaja Iyengar, enrolled her in his classes where he taught her some Muthuswami Dikshitar kritis.
Vani Jairam was a student at Queen Mary’s College, Madras University. After graduation, Vani was employed at State Bank of India, Madras and later in 1967 she was transferred to Hyderabad branch.
Vani was married into a family that supported music. Her stepmother, Padma Swaminathan, a social activist and singer of Carnatic music, was the last surviving daughter of FG Natesa Iyer. N. Rajam is his sister-in-law.
Vani died of a fall on February 4, 2023, at the age of 78.
